EN 1143-1 Grade III Watch Safes: What Collectors Can Actually Buy

Compare two Grade III watch-safe project routes, their interiors, price bases and the documents to request before ordering.

Quick answer: which Grade III watch safes can you consider?

Mercier & Fils Régent projects and the Buben & Zörweg TURBO S VdS III are two starting points for a collector seeking Grade III protection with integrated winding. Mercier identifies ECB•S for its certified Régent safe bodies; Buben lists a specific VdS III version. Compare the exact configurations and request the corresponding certificate before ordering. This is a focused buying guide, not an exhaustive list of all Grade III manufacturers.

Once you have decided to investigate Grade III, a generic “best watch safe” list is less useful. You need to know which configuration carries the stated protection, what fits inside it and whether the finished safe can be installed at your property.

The distinction between a family name and a certified configuration is central. A brand may offer several protection levels or interiors under related names. The certificate and order must identify what you are actually buying.

Configuration Protection identified in the source Interior in this comparison Price reference
Mercier & Fils Régent Grade III proposal EN 1143-1 Grade III safe body, with ECB•S identified by Mercier Eight independently adjustable winders; configurable storage and finishes $29,900 supplied quote, delivery included; tax and installation scope to confirm
Buben & Zörweg TURBO S VdS III VdS III version identified in the retailer catalogue Eight TIME MOVER modules and three drawers in the standard Safe S layout €53,800 European VAT-inclusive recommended retail, ex works; transport and installation separate

These examples come from a supplied Mercier proposal and Buben’s 2026 retailer handbook. They do not establish that every product sold by either brand is Grade III. WOLF Athos, advertised as Eurograde I, is not included as a Grade III candidate merely because it also has winding modules.

What should the Grade III quotation identify?

The quotation should connect the retail configuration to a verifiable certified safe body. Ask for the model reference, issuing body, relevant certificate and the proposed locking arrangement. A brochure grade without that connection leaves an important part of the purchasing decision unresolved.

The ECB•S certification mark is intended to identify the certified product and classification. It gives the buyer information to compare with the accompanying documentation. It is not a substitute for checking that the quoted configuration uses the corresponding body.

The retail name and the certified body may differ

A watch-safe specialist can fit out a certified body and sell the finished product under its own model name. Mercier sells its configured watch safes as Régent. The useful question is whether the paperwork links the finished proposal to the protected construction, not whether every name on every document is identical.

Keep this practical: ask the seller to state the correspondence in writing. You do not need an article full of supplier references to make an informed purchase.

What happens when winders are added?

Integrated winding introduces electrical equipment and a fitted interior. Ask the supplier to confirm that the proposed arrangement is compatible with the certified construction. Do not assume that an added opening, cable route or modified locking arrangement is covered simply because the original body had a certificate.

The same grade can come with very different interiors

Security classification does not tell you how convenient the safe will be to use. Check whether each position supports the settings your watches require, whether the holders fit your bracelets and whether static storage remains accessible with the winding positions occupied.

The quoted Régent configuration includes independent turns-per-day settings, a touchscreen, a dedicated remote and integrated LED lighting. Mercier can configure the interior and, where requested, the exterior finish. The useful result is a plan matched to your collection rather than a winder count alone.

The TURBO S catalogue specifies eight winders and three drawers. Its approximately 29.3 × 20.4 × 20.2-inch exterior is a different format from the Régent proposal. Check actual compartment dimensions instead of assuming two eight-winder products accommodate the same jewelry, documents or larger watches.

How do the prices compare at Grade III?

The Mercier $29,900 proposal is a US-dollar quote with delivery included. The Buben €53,800 figure is a European catalogue price including VAT, with separate logistics. Those are useful references, but neither a direct currency conversion nor a subtraction establishes the final US price difference.

Request the same interior capacity and delivery endpoint from both suppliers. Compare taxes, export treatment, room placement and anchoring. A security-led value conclusion should refer to the specified projects, not claim that one entire brand is always cheaper.

Our watch-safe cost guide explains how to separate the product price from the installed budget.

Which details need settling before delivery?

Ask for finished dimensions and weight after the interior and exterior selections are agreed. For the Régent comparison, the documented body reference is approximately 31.9 × 26.8 × 20.1 inches and 873 lb before the final project specification is confirmed. The TURBO S catalogue lists approximately 783 lb. These are planning inputs, not proof that the route or floor is suitable.

Agree installation in accordance with the chosen product’s requirements. The VdS requirements for safes provide relevant context, but the exact model and site still govern the installation plan. Where a policy requires a particular safe, obtain the insurer’s confirmation before buying.

Grade III buying questions

Does Grade III certify the winders?

No. The burglary-resistance classification should not be treated as a performance certification for the winding modules. Check winding compatibility, controls and service arrangements separately.

Can I request a different interior?

Ask what the supplier can change within the proposed configuration and obtain a revised drawing and quote. Customization should not leave the connection to the certified construction ambiguous.

Does Grade III guarantee insurance acceptance?

No. Acceptance depends on the policy, installation and other applicable conditions. A grade is information for the insurer, not a universal promise of coverage.

Choose a complete Grade III proposal

Mercier & Fils offers a Grade III Régent project route with integrated winding, while Buben’s TURBO S provides a catalogued VdS III alternative. The next step is to compare complete, documented proposals: body, interior, dimensions, price and installation. That is more useful than comparing a grade in isolation.
