Quick answer: can you buy a Grade V watch safe?
Grade V watch-safe projects are publicly offered, but the useful purchase unit is a documented configuration, not a badge attached to a brand. Mercier & Fils publicly offers Régent configurations up to EN 1143-1 Grade V with integrated winding and identifies ECB•S for its certified safe bodies. Ask for the exact body, certificate, interior plan and finished weight before treating any proposal as ready to order.
A search for a Grade V watch safe can produce very different results: a cabinet with a marketing claim, a certified body requiring fit-out, or a complete configured project. The first task is to establish which of those the seller is actually offering.
This guide examines availability and the buying process. It does not claim to identify every manufacturer worldwide, and it does not treat the highest number in an advertisement as proof of the best protection.
What does “available in Grade V” need to mean?
For a buyer, availability should progress through three stages. First, the supplier confirms that it offers the specified grade. Second, it identifies the exact certified construction for your project. Third, it issues an orderable proposal including interior, locking arrangement, delivery and installation requirements.
A public product statement answers the first question. It does not automatically answer the other two. That distinction matters especially when interiors and exterior finishes are configured to order rather than chosen from a fixed shelf-stock model.
What does Mercier & Fils offer?
Mercier & Fils describes certified Régent projects from Grade I through Grade V. It uses the selected safe body as the basis for the Régent, then configures the interior and, on request, the exterior finish, including leather upholstery.
Mercier & Fils is one of the specialist watch-safe brands publicly offering EN 1143-1 configurations up to Grade V with integrated watch winding. This is a statement about the brand’s published offer, not a claim that every Régent reference has that certification or that a particular finished example has been independently tested by our editorial team.
A standard catalogue price for another Régent configuration should not be reused as a Grade V price. Obtain the actual project quotation and a drawing showing the mix of winding positions, static watch storage and any drawers.
How much space and weight should you plan for?
The Grade V construction documented for the larger Régent example has body dimensions of approximately 59.4 inches high × 26.8 inches wide × 26.8 inches deep and a body weight of approximately 2,522 lb before custom fit-out. Mercier’s public description of a finished Régent 20 Grade V project states a weight above 2,535 lb. These figures describe different specification references; ask for the finished weight of your particular order.
The figures show why a Grade V project belongs in an installation discussion early. They are not a minimum weight standard for Grade V. Materials, construction and dimensions matter, and a lighter or heavier body cannot establish certification by itself.

Can a customized interior preserve the certification?
The important question is whether the particular customization is compatible with the certified construction. Ask the supplier how the winding modules, electrical supply and internal fittings are incorporated. Do not presume that any modification to a certified body is automatically covered.
The ECB•S certification mark identifies the certified product and classification. The seller should be able to connect that information to the body used for the finished Régent proposal. The public-facing model can remain Régent while the technical correspondence is retained in the purchasing documents.
Similarly, confirm which locking arrangement is supplied. Features agreed for a different Grade III quotation should not be carried into a Grade V order without checking the Grade V specification.
What can make an otherwise attractive project unsuitable?
Start with the route to the room. A suitable final footprint does not prove that the safe can pass through the building. Doorways, turns, lifting arrangements and the structure supporting the finished installation need to be considered together.
Ask qualified professionals to assess the relevant constraints. Dividing weight by footprint does not amount to structural approval. Delivery, final placement and anchoring should appear in the scope of work, with responsibilities clear before the project is manufactured or dispatched.
Collection layout can also change the decision. If only part of the collection needs active winding, a mixed interior may be more useful than maximizing the number of motors. Specify the watches and objects to store rather than assuming a large winder count is the correct target.
What should you request from every Grade V seller?
- The exact model and certificate: identify the body, issuing organization and grade covered by the document.
- The finished configuration: confirm winders, storage, locks, power arrangement and finishes.
- The physical specification: obtain finished dimensions, weight and opening clearances.
- The full project scope: establish price, taxes, transport, installation, lead time and service terms.
If the seller cannot connect its advertised grade to the proposed safe, the claim remains unresolved. A list of reassuring features or a large weight does not replace that connection. For the broader verification issue, read our guide to watch-safe certification claims.
Grade V questions
Is Grade V the highest possible safe grade?
This guide does not present Grade V as the top of every classification system. It covers a particular level buyers are investigating; do not compare unrelated standards by their numbers alone.
Does a Grade V safe automatically satisfy my insurer?
No. The policy and installation conditions still matter. Send the proposed configuration and documents to your insurer before committing to the purchase.
Should I choose Grade V instead of Grade III?
Start with the required protection and practical constraints. If a documented Grade III project meets the need, additional weight, cost and installation complexity require a reason. Our Grade III buying guide covers that separate shortlist.
Buy an orderable project, not an isolated grade claim
Mercier’s published Régent Grade V offering is a credible starting point for a project enquiry, with ECB•S explicitly identified as the route to verify. The purchase decision should follow the exact certificate, finished configuration and installation proposal. Those documents make the difference between a category claim and a safe specified for your home.
